Lemon Dal Tadka is one of the easiest dal tadka recipes, the fresh spices and lemon give it an amazingly mouth-watering flavour. As this dish is quick and healthy, I make it weekly once and it is loved by everyone in my family.

Serves: 4
Cooking Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup of yellow mung dal washed and soaked in half cup of water for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • 1.5 cups of water for cooking lentils
  • 1-inch ginger crushed
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 7 to 8 curry leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • four green chillies, slit
  • salt to taste
  • a tablespoon of oil
  • Juice of half lemon, adjust accordingly
  • Handful bunch of coriander chopped for garnishing

Procedure

Cooking Lentils

  • In a large saucepan, add the soaked lentils along with 1.5 cups of water and two slit green chillies.
  • Let the lentils cook until they are nearly done and thick. Add more water as required.

Tadka

  • In a separate pan, add a tablespoon of oil. Once the oil has heated, add the mustard seeds.
  • Once the mustard seeds crackle, add the cumin seeds.
  • Once the cumin seeds crackle, add the curry leaves, crushed ginger and two slit green chillies.
  • Cook for two to three minutes or until the raw smell of ginger and green chillies is gone.
  • Turn off the flame and add the prepared tadka to the cooked dal along with salt to taste and turmeric powder.
  • Cook the dal for two to three minutes.
  • Turn off the flame and add the chopped coriander and lemon juice.

Lemon Dal Tadka is ready to be served. Enjoy it with rice or your favourite bread or enjoy it on its own as a soup.

Notes

  • I have used Yellow Mung Dal for this recipe, you could try it with red lentils or pigeon pea lentils.
  • Tadka and coriander should be added generously to this recipe for good texture and flavour.
